Four lovers venture into the woods to pursue their romantic desires and to escape the restrictive laws of their society. They become lost in a forest populated by natural spirits empowered with magical love potions. It is a world of possibility and adventure where passions are unleashed, attachments broken, and re-forged. Who will love whom in the end? Will the marriages forbidden in the opening acts be permitted when the lovers return from the forest? Through gender cross-casting and innovative staging this production will bring the play into the 21st century, breaking the binary and hierarchical conception of gender and sexuality encoded in the text. The School of the Arts production of Midsummer Night’s Dream will be a celebration love in all its natural forms.
